The 22nd IPMA World Congress is now closed.
It has been a great success. The event was attended by nearly 1,000 delegates from 40 countries around the world.
The scientific content was very high. We had 250 papers, 8 keynote speakers, and 3 panels with eminent personalities.
Interest in project management is growing.
The 22nd IPMA WC was probably the IPMA congress with the highest participation of top managers from industry and universities.
The opening ceremony saw the welcoming speeches of the Chairman, Luigi Iperti, of the President of ANIMP, Fabrizio di Amato, of Veikko Valila, the President of IPMA, of Prof. Gianfranco Carrara representing La Sapienza University of Rome and of the Honourable Luca Bellotti, representing the Mayor of Rome, Gianni Alemanno.
The convention was opened by the speech by Mary McKinlay “Where is project management running to…?” followed by an interesting analysis of the world financial situation by Fabio Gallia of the BNL Bank and reached its climax in the touching presentation by Toni Ruttimann, the man who has built over 400 suspension bridges for the poor of Central America and South-East Asia.
A musical interlude followed with the music of E. Morricone, played on the piano by Gilda Buttà, and with the Group KanTango who performed some outstanding Neapolitan songs.
There followed two days of presentations and intense debates. Especially exciting was the evening of the second day when awards were handed out to the 9 Prize Winners and the Excellence Project Award was given to the Lomellina 2 Project of Foster Wheeler Italiana SpA, Italy.
The Opera Show performance, with the extraordinary participation of Luciana Serra, soprano, Stefano La Colla, Tenor and the Nova Amadeus Orchestra conducted by the Maestro Daniele Ferrari, was followed in a near religious silence by all present who showed their appreciation for the various Operatic Arias with enthusiastic applause.
The congress concluded with the presentation of the Research Award and the best wishes of Fabrizio di Amato, of President Valila and of the incoming President of IPMA, Brigitte Schaden.
But the real conclusion of the congress came at the Farewell Dinner at the Salone delle Fontane where the young people of the Young Crew and the less young of the various musical groups performed their national songs under the attentive direction of Morten Fangel.
The performances of the Russians, Indians and Chinese and all the other national groups were exceptional.
Mario Pinna, on keyboard, succeeded in providing exactly the right music to accompany the traditional songs from the various countries.
Here is the closing address of Luigi Iperti, the Chairman of the Congress:
“Thirty months ago we started up with a small organizing team that grew to become quite a large group. Now it will be dissolved, but the people will not disappear and I am sure they will continue to remember “Project management To Run”.
I have had fantastic and enthusiastic collaboration from Advisory Board members, Stream Chairmen, the Scientific Committee, staff personnel, women and men who have worked tirelessly and unstintingly. Tonight I wish to thank them all.'
At this point I would like to thank all the people and the companies who have given their collaboration and support for the successful outcome of this Congress: first and foremost our sponsors who helped us to build the organization of our Congress and the different entities who have given their patronage. I would like to thank the IPMA family including all its Officers, the Council of delegates, Executive Board members, MA.
We have tried to do our best and we ask you to be understanding of our mistakes.
Tomorrow all of us will be on the RUN, some to see Rome, but the majority back to our businesses and our homes.
But PROJECT MANAGEMENT TO RUN will never come to an end, it will continue.
In the race of life there is no finishing line.
This Congress has enhanced our appreciation for the value of project management.
A thousand people have heard about, spoken about and discussed project management.
We have had great presentations and great speakers. We must thank them all.
We know that we have to take still further steps in developing the real culture of project management everywhere, but especially so in some countries.
At this IPMA Congress, for the first time here in Italy we have had a very strong participation in and attention to project management. I am happy and confident that our progress will continue.
Yes Project Management To Run
Wherever there is a project, wherever there are people who want to build something or to organise resources, project management will be available to help them obtain good results on time and within budget.
We leave Rome, and we leave friends old and new. The Congress is concluded but we will continue to have project management.
And we will have other opportunities to be together again in Helsinki, in Johannesburg and in other places around the world.
Our friendship will continue…
Thanks to everybody for coming and being with us.
Arrivederci ! “
