That was the over-riding theme of the 25th Italian National Engineering and Plant Engineering Convention in Santa Margherita.
Fabrizio di Amato, Chairman of ANIMP and Federprogetti, the Federation recently formed by ANIMP, OICE and UAMI, said:
"We must not put up any longer with our Country's failure to complete those long-planned infrastructure projects that are essential to its development just because of the opposition of minority groups."
It is well-known that in Italy on the basis of the NIMBY principle (not in my back-yard), that the Italian government has not wanted to challenge, the nuclear programme was cancelled, the high speed rail system and vital road infrastructure projects - particularly in the north - were delayed, and the building of new power stations and LNG degassification plants was made difficult.
"We ask the new Berlusconi government," continued Fabrizio di Amato, "to restart the programme for the construction of these important projects."
And the Deputy Minister of the Infrastructure, Roberto Castelli, while not hiding the difficulties that have to be confronted, confirmed the Government's intention of working to remove the obstacles, legislative included, and of finding a positive solution to this major problem.
During the course of the debate, in which authoritative representatives of the major Italian engineering companies took part, Roberto Poli, Chairman of ENI, stressed that today delays were no longer acceptable.
He said: "What in the past was devised and created in five years today is achieved in one, because of globalisation and the speed at which emerging countries, such as China, are now moving."
This concept was taken up by Luigi Iperti, Chairman of the 22nd IPMA WC that is to be held in Rome. "Precisely because 'time' has become increasingly scarce we have chosen as the theme of our congress Project Management To Run. Good PM makes it possible to run our programmes and complete them rapidly and well." Luigi Iperti then illustrated the progress made in the organisation of the Congress and thanked the numerous sponsors present for the support they were giving to it.
